Translation/Interpretation/Caption Text:
Arabic translation:
Mother, woe to love (desire)
Mother, woe to me
The pain of daggers are preferable to the control (oppression) of the tyrant over me
يما مويل الهوى يما مويل يا
ضرب الخناجر ولا حكم النذل فيا
Curator's Note: This is the opening line to a popular Palestinian folk song. Another version of the song (perhaps the original) goes, "Mother, woe to love (desire) Mother, woe to me, The pain of daggers are preferable to mistreatment by my beloved." It is possible that the version of the song in this poster is more contemporary, made popular as a nationalistic liberation song.
